The Standards that set out the skills, knowledge and experience needed to work in spectator safety are being reviewed to ensure they reflect the evolving skills required of today’s stewards.
The Standards, known as the National Occupational Standards (NOS) for Spectator Safety, are developed and owned by SkillsActive, the skills sector council for active leisure and learning.
SkillsActive are working in collaboration with the sector, including the SGSA, sports governing bodies, the National Counter Terrorism Security Office and other key stakeholders to refresh the NOS for Spectator Safety for Levels 2, 3 and 4. SkillsActive will be consulting on the NOS in 2018 and welcomes feedback from anyone with an interest.
Once the NOS have been agreed, these will then form the basis of the topics that qualifications in spectator safety will need to meet.
All stewards working at a sports ground which has a general safety certificate, should be trained, assessed for occupational competence and have obtained a qualification within 12 months of starting work as an unaccompanied steward.
